meet Deandre, American Idol Season 11 contestant Deandre Brackensick is a soft spoken guy with an incredible singing voice. After Deandre sang “This Woman’s Work” last week, judge Jennifer Lopez told him she’d been waiting to hear him sing that very song, which is famous for its high falsetto notes — and nearly impossible to sing.
Deandre says he’s always been able to hit those high notes. He tells Mercury News, “I always had a high, squeaky voice. Some kids made fun of it and told me that I sounded like a girl,” he says. “Finally, puberty kicked in. But high is still my comfort zone (in singing).”
The 17 year old is also very proud of his family’s Hawaiian heritage and is well-versed in the Hawaiian language — as well the ukelele. Deandre started performing in hula competitions at age 8, at which point he started to grow out his long curly locks. Deandre, who was elected Homecoming King at his high school, says his hair is a great prop and “girls seem to like it.”
